Highway61

When you don't want to visit a whole bunch of different search engines to submit a query head straight to a MetaSearch Engine. Highway 61 will search sites such as Yahoo, InfoSeek, and Web Crawler all at once for you. There are a couple of filtering options that will allow you to dictate things such as how many returns you want, how long you're willing to wait, etc. The results can be weak and unless you choose "Hurry Up! You Loser!" as your patience level, there is a wait.  www.highway61.com

Dogpile

Use 13 search engines all at once with Dogpile. Query results are returned grouped according to what search engine they were pulled from and are ordered from the most specific to the most general. In addition to being able to search the WWW, Dogpile can also search business news, FTP, news wires, stock quotes and Usenet. All of Dogpile's sources are listed on the front page. Filtering your query takes some detective work as the options are not easily located. Find the hyperlinks to "Custom Search" and "MetaFind Search" on the left had side and you will be able to choose which engines Dogpile will query and how long you're willing to wait.  www.dogpile.com/

Mamma.com probes 10 search engines such as Yahoo!, Excite, AltaVista, Lycos and Infoseek as well as MP3 files and news articles. It attempts to filter out duplicate returns, occasionally unsuccessfully, but the relevance of the returns was quite impressive. This metasearch tool typically returns between 10 and 100 results for a given search term which gives a user a place to start. The results are returned in an easy to understand list with source engine listed and each site description is usually pretty clear. Mamma's Power search lets you pick the search engines, determine how long you're willing to wait and how many returns you want to see per page.  www.mamma.com/index.html

MetaCrawler

A wide variety of power search features, reliable quality rankings, dead link checks, clear site descriptions and quick results are just a few of the reasons MetaCrawler is such a great MetaSearch tool. Although it only queries about 9 search engines the results are fast and relevant. You can even make a customized search page and keep preferences for future searches.  www.go2net.com/search.html

ProFusion

Though it's not as large as some of its competitors, Intelliseek's recently acquired ProFusion has one feature that makes it stand out in the crowd. It checks the status of all the links before they are listed for you. No need to worry whether or not the site you click on will actually be there. ProFusion also ranks each site, though the process they follow in ranking is a mystery. Sites seemed to be relevant and you don't have to wait too long for returns. Filtering is limited to search type (simple, Boolean, phrase, etc.) number of results, and choosing which engines you want to query.  www.profusion.com/

"Search once, find everything"--so says SavvySearch engine's creators. One thing's for sure, it's BIG. You can search everything from Alta Vista, Excite, HotBot, Infoseek, Lycos, Open Text and WebCrawler to directories, indexes, people finders, Usenet and more. Filtering features are rather limited, but the ability to customize your own search is available. Returns are of good quality, relevant, and organized well.  www1.savvysearch.com/

Matchsite

A mega search engine with a lot of portal feature.  Matchsite taps into nine of the top search engines. There are no advance search features and no indication as to how sites are organized in each return. However, presentation of the results is in an easy to follow format with few if any duplications or dead links.  www.matchsite.com
